Oh boy, here we go again…

If that last economic crash wasn’t hard enough for you, just wait until you read today’s catalogue of woe.

(This is not to unduly scare you, by the way, it’s to keep you informed so you can take some positive action).

Seems the banks are at it again.

They’re luring people into overly complex financial investments with promises of big returns… creating a new bubble of risky lending.

According to Sam Dunn from This Is Money, “Cautious savers are being lured into gambling half-a-billion pounds every month on risky and complicated stock market investments promising returns of up to 10.5 per cent.”

He goes onto say: “More than £1.3billion was poured into complex investments, which were sold by High Street banks, building societies and financial advisers in the first two months of the year.”

I know this sort of return sounds good…. We’re talking about a hefty 10.5% income on your money vs. the measly 0.5% rate you get from keeping your money in a savings account.

You can see why people are keen to get in. Because think about this…

At the moment you get 0.5% return on your money, but inflation is at 3.7% (official figure – you know full well from your latest shopping trip that, in reality it’s FAR higher than that). This means your money is declining in value as it sits there in the bank.

Worse still, the spending power of the money in your back pocket is being withered away day by day.

Most mainstream economists like to pretend inflation is under control – and, thanks to the fiddled figures, it doesn’t look too bad all things considered.

But on the street things look different.

To give you an example…

Stop, MEAT THIEF!

According to a recent report in the Financial Times, the theft of meat from supermarkets has gone up 20%.And that’s because meat prices have inflated by 6.1% in just one year.

Can you guess what some papers are calling these meat thieves?

… ‘Hamburglars’.

Made me laugh anyway. It has to be the weirdest crime wave of the century.

But I guess it’s not really a laughing matter. Taking inflation into account, household disposable income fell 1.2% last year. That’s the steepest drop since the 1970s. Things aren’t looking pretty and they’re not about to get any better.

So let’s look at the situation…

Feeble interest rates punishing hard working savers… their money declining in front of their eyes thanks to 3.7% inflation.

High REAL inflation hitting pensioners, workers whose income can’t buy as much and tax payers who still fall into the same tax bracket even though their earnings are worth less.

No wonder these new investment vehicles look so tasty.

And they sound very solid, too. They have wonderful, mahogany-clad names like ‘Fixed Term Capital Secure Investment’ or’ Capital Protected Fund’.

But the problem is this…

These products are really complex. They’re not based on stock market investments. Instead it’s all based on ‘derivatives’ – that’s a return you get from a BET on where the stock market will be in the future.

Now, if you like a flutter, I’m not going to stop you. And there’s nothing wrong with it.

But many people buying these high interest investments don’t realise that there’s an aspect of risk. If the bet doesn’t come off, you won’t make a return. You can even lose money.

This is why from March 2011 to March 2012, complaints about these investments have doubled – and 96% of those complaints have been upheld.

So what should you do?

Some sound advice

By all means try one of these investments. They do have the capacity to make you 10% interest or more. But understand that there’s a risk. Ask the right questions of the bank salesperson. Don’t sleepwalk into a situation where you’ll be surprised, disappointed by a non-return or even a loss, and have to go through the channels of complaint.

If you have a complaint, then go through an ombudsman. Details of how to do this are here.

For some information on an alternative to banks, take a look at this recent post on my website.

You should think about alternative ways to compensate for the money you’re haemorrhaging because of low interest rates and high inflation.

For example, you should think about ways of earning an extra income so that you can push ahead of the inflationary menace.

You can take a browse through some of my recommended income blueprints, plans and services here.

I was going to write something about last week’s elections today…

Maybe something pithy about mayors, coalitions, sad Cleggs and people called Boris.

But then I remembered…

You’re most likely sick to death of hearing about it…. it’s just another story of broken promises and power-struggles and nothing ever changes… and you just want to get on coping with this double dip recession and coming out of it with your sanity and finances intact AND maybe… just maybe… get what you deserve out of life… and follow your dreams and desires, have fun, and end your days satisfied that did everything you could to fulfil your potential.

Am I right?

Perhaps not. But I had a lovely email from a reader along these lines in response to my letter on Saturday 29th April (“This costs 27p but could make £1m”) which is now on my website here.

In that email I suggest a 4-part strategy for achieving your goals. You start with a small easily achievable goal, then a longer term goal, then a realistic 5-year ambition and finally – the ULTIMATE dream, your ideal life!

Anyway, this struck a nerve with one of my readers, who told me:

“On March 7th this year I was dashed into hospital with a stroke, which left me unable to move my right hand side… I am slowly getting movement back, but touch and feeling in my hand is minimal, so I can’t cook, iron, clean or hoover up after my family.

I love crafting – card designing, sewing, photography, jewellery making/ Nearly all of which are having to be put on the back burner for now.”

Despite this sudden disability, she’s come up with her own 4 point plan based on my Rich Life Letter from last week…

“Phase 1 – To make some jewellery as part of the therapy to regain strength, to be able to control the movements of my hand and motor skills.

Phase 2 – To find a way of selling them to raise funds for equipment.

Phase 3 – To get at least one piece photographed and published with my story either on the internet or in a magazine.

Phase 4 – To be good enough to have my own range available to sell, and that people want to buy them because they are good! Who knows, in a year or so I could be on QVC advertising my own range of Handicapable Craft Kits?”

What an inspirational attitude. Here’s someone turning what must be a frightening and frustrating health problem into an almighty positive, and laying out her own path to recovery – and profit.

Brilliant. That’s what it’s all about.

Knockbacks? Financial problems? Motivation low?

Here’s what to do…

If you’re feeling savaged by personal knockbacks, financial problems and – most importantly – your own motivational struggles, then I completely understand how hard it can be to see the positives.

But try creating your own 4-phase plan and see what happens. You have to tackle these problems at some time, somehow. And writing them down, along with concrete solutions, can have a remarkable effect, no matter how flaky that might sound right now.

My advice – JUST DO IT!

And if you’re inspired to create your own plan, please drop me an email and let me know about it, I’d love to hear from you and I’ll even give you some feedback if you like.

My personal email address is below:
lewisgeary@hotmail.co.uk

Finally today…

If you missed this – you’re missing a treat.

The brilliant Eddie Lyons has now sent out his first two issues of The Lions Share, packed with humorous analysis of the latest sporting events, canny predictions and sports betting tips.

So far he’s passed on these nuggets…

How to spread bet on rising fuel prices… a last chance to profit from Manchester City before the clash… how to snatch a great price on a classy F1 driver… why there’s rich pickings to be had in this US sport… and an announcement about the Olympics.

Feedback’s been great – much of it along the lines of:

“WHY IS THIS FREE?”

Well, it’s true that this sort of service can cost a great deal of money in subscription fees….

But Eddie is keeping this permanently free for Rich Life Letter readers who get in now.

So if you like a flutter or fancy putting a little cash in your back pocket, or you just love sport and love to soak up new knowledge, then click here.

When you join you’ll get an e-book called The Intelligent Investors Guide to Sports Betting, which is worth reading. And if you join before Friday, you’ll be able to get the next issue of The Lion’s Share on Saturday which will include:

REVEALED! Use This Deadly Weapon And The Bookies Will Fear You!

Olympics 2012; Make A Splash, And Some Cash…As This Boy-Wonder Is Set To Shatter Records!

Not to be missed!

Cheers for now,

Oops.

No sooner do I research and write a letter to you about drought proofing your home to escape the ravages of a rainless spring…

…the heavens open and water falls from the sky in mighty buckets.

“HA HA, GEARY!” laughed the clouds “YOU FOOL!”

Yes, after my drought prediction on the 5th of April, we’ve had the wettest month since months were invented.

This week a skylight in our attic room (my office hideaway, piled with books and badly filed papers) started leaking. I walked in to see water pouring into my printer.

It was such a surreal sight that at first I just stood and stared. I thought I was still in bed, dreaming.

So I’ll admit. I’m not much of a weather forecaster.

But today I want to show you a resource that – in terms of making a little income on the side – is as good as a crystal ball. It won’t help you predict rain but if you want find out whether a business opportunity, trading strategy, success book or moneymaking newsletter is any good BEFORE you buy – this is essential.

Take a look at this.

Before I go on, let me tell you – I first told Rich Life Letters about this service when I joined it myself back in 2007, and I still count it as indispensible.

Because this is more than just a review service… it’s a source of proven ideas, tried and tested by volunteers and researchers.

Let me illustrate…

How this ‘failed’ home entrepreneur turned
his life around

Ever heard of Jon Street?

You might have come across him online. He’s a home entrepreneur with a remarkable back-story.

In 2005 Jon ran a t-shirt printing company that was ‘failing miserably’. He wasn’t even making enough to cover his costs. And then he broke his wrist which meant he couldn’t operate the t-shirt press.

That was when he found a mentor in Nick Laight who gave him a series of blueprints – and support – that helped him start his own internet business.

Jon says: “These days I run a number of different businesses. I live in a penthouse apartment in an area usually reserved for footballers and highly paid professionals (most people in my block think I’m a drug dealer).”

If you’d like a similar leg up, then check this out.

See what you can do in the next 12 months

What I like about this service that Nick Laight is prepared to put his money where his mouth is. You can try this for a whole year. If it hasn’t helped you make money (or for ANY reason you like) – then you can get a full refund.

That’s an amazing offer, especially considering the really low price AND what you get:

Access to hundreds of reviews – these are updated weekly so you can decide before shelling out your hard earned cash

Detailed step by step plans for starting your own highly profitable online or offline business including e-book publishing, eBay, e-letters, your own local newspaper, digital cameras, premium rate phone lines, PC doctor, luxury car valeting, overseas property investment, lettings agent, Amazon bookseller, blogs..

A chance to share your experiences – good and bad – with fellow members on a private forum and team up with others in join ventures.

Read success stories of ordinary people who have discovered real workable home and full time business ideas

See what you can do in the next 12 months – put Nick to the test. His advice could save you a lot of heartache trying unsuitable business plans.

And finally today – some reader feedback…

Two books that inspired a business

After my email about Napoleon Hill and turning 27p into a million pounds (see www.richlifeletter.com for my previous issues) a reader emailed me to say:

“Back in the early seventies I did a training course with the CICA (Combined Insurance Company of America) for selling accident insurance. It involved a fortnight of a very intensive training course. During this time we were also given (to keep) two books.

*SUCCESS THROUGH A POSITIVE MENTAL ATTITUDE by Napoleon Hill & W. Clement Stone

*THE SUCCESS SYSTEM THAT NEVER FAILS by W. Clement Stone

I was not with them for long but it did teach me one very important lesson. It is much better if you wish to change, to do something that you are familiar with (I was at the time fully trained in mechanical engineering) I did eventually end up with my own business later on in life (now retired)”

So there you go… two books given to him in the 1970s sowed the seeds for a business.

And this is why the Rich Life Letter, and resources like Nick Laight’s What Really Makes Money, are so important. They allow you to shop around for ideas that suit you…. Helping you set up income streams doing something you actually enjoy.

Forget the big money claims. Forget the “easy” claims.

When you see a pitch for a seminar, manual or business course, ask yourself this: “What could I do in my spare time, that I will enjoy, that will make me enough extra to start paying off a few debts?”

If you can make just a few quid each week from a plan that you enjoy following, then you can put more into it, and work towards bigger dreams.

I’ll be back with more over the weekend.

How much is a Bic biro these days?

One website I found had these pens going for a unit cost of 27p.

That seems reasonable, so let’s go with that.

What I want to show you today is how 27p spent on that biro (free if you’ve already got one!) and a piece of paper (the back of large envelope will do it) can make you rich… or… at the very least… debtless, liberated from money worries and on the right track to financial independence.

And before I do this, let me say…

Many people (poor people, usually) scoff at this idea. They tell me it’s flaky, mystical nonsense.

But before you jump to conclusions, please understand this – not only do I carry out this task on a regular basis, it’s also the cornerstone strategy one of my closest contacts, who owns a business worth multiple millions and STILL does this every month….

It’s also used by a friend who is a top academic AND a friend who started a new writing career 12 months ago and has already been published TWICE.

So this works. And if you try it, I can pretty much promise you’ll see some kind of result.

Okay?

Great.

How to turn a humble pen into a million pound legacy

Take your 27p Bic biro and a sheet of paper lying about the house.

Slit the paper into two columns.

Write BUDGET on the left side. GOALS on the right side.

On the left hand side, you need to write down your income after tax, then list the major things you spend money on.

Out of the money you have left, take 10% and put it in a savings account. What you have left is money you want to invest in ideas – home business plans, self-education, personal advancement, books, courses – anything that could help you start generating an income on top of what you earn. If this is you, you can now go to the right hand column.

But if, like many people today, you list your income and your spending and there’s nothing left or – worse – you’re in the red, then here’s what to do.

Work out exactly how much you need to trim off your spending to pull yourself back into the black. Go through every item in the left hand column and work out your own austerity cuts.

Some common options:

Swapping energy providers to get a better deal

Making your home more energy efficient to save on bills

Using www.skype.com to make free calls

Changing where you shop and shopping with a strict budgeted list you work out in advance

Planning meals

Setting tighter budgets on clothes, food and fuel

Car sharing, walking more, getting a bicycle

Use websites like http://uk.freecycle.org/, eBay,com and other websites to get bargains and freebies

If you need information on how to go about these, go to www.richlifeletter.com and take a look in the ‘archive’ for ideas on saving money and making money.

Saving money probably won’t be enough to save you, long term. So you will also need to come up with some concrete ways you can put add some money to your income to pay off your debts.

Which brings me to the second side of the sheet.

The Napoleon Hill maxim that really works

Whatever the results of your budget – whether you have some disposable income or not – you need to set firm goals.

Here’s where we get to the real secret, and the bit that my sceptical friends sneer at.

What I’ve discovered in life is that if you write down specific goals on a piece of paper they are more likely to become true. Simple as that.

You’re probably heard of Napoleon Hill, a famous writer on success and self-improvement. His maxim was:

“Whatever your mind can conceive, it will achieve”.

By visualising a goal and manifesting it by physically writing it down and having it there to see every day, you will dramatically increase your chances of achieving that goal.

ALL the most successful people I know do this.

Ask any top athlete and they’ll tell you that they visualise winning the race, or breaking the record before they attempt it. Literally they act out the event in their mind first.

It’s not some flimsy success tip – it actually works.

Try it and see…

Write these FOUR goals down today and watch what happens

First, start with a small, realistic goal. For example, you might write “To pay off a £500 Barclaycard bill in the next 4 months.”

Now write down some options for achieving this. For instance: “Car boot sale, eBay, giving up cigarettes.” Flesh these out a bit and put some specific dates on when you’re going to do each one.

Now look at a longer term goal. For instance “I will be completely rid of my personal debt within 12 months”.

Again, write down some specific ways you could achieve this. It could be spending cuts, moneysaving strategies, plus one or two solid ideas for generating a bit extra to top up your income. Add some deadlines for each element.

Take a look at my website www.richlifeletter.com and look in the archives for ideas, plans and blueprints.

Now give yourself an ever bigger goal – put yourself in the position you most would like to be in the near future. Something that, while ambitious, is not beyond the realms of possibility.

For instance, you might write: “By 2016 I want to have income streams worth £1,000 a month topping up my work pay, no debt, and £500 a month going into mortgage repayments.”

Or “By 2016 I want to have enough money saved up to retire early from my job and concentrate on my love of landscape painting.”

Or “Within 5 years I want to have £40,000 saved up to put down a deposit on my dream home on the Kent coast to live near my grandchildren.”

And FINALLY…

Set your ultimate ambition. What is it you most desire from life?

In this final entry on your sheet of paper you can dare to dream a bit.

“I’d like to run my own business from home, be my own boss, drive that Mercedes I’ve always wanted.”

“I’d like to retire by 2015 and start a property portfolio which I will manage with my son who is struggling to find work.”

“I’d like to move to the South of France and renovate a farm property where my wife and I can grow our own food and life a peaceful, rewarding retirement.”

“I’d like to rent out our home for a year and sail the world on a cruise, taking photographs for my own website.”

“I would like to leave my awful job, become a writer and work from a cottage in the Lake District.”

If you don’t believe you can reach this point – that it’s possible, however unlikely it seems now – then there’s no point in having the dream. Forget about it.

But if a tiny part of you believes that dream could become a reality, then don’t wait around with a lottery ticket. Start with that first achievable goal. When you achieve it, write another small goal down. Keep going until you start to reach those bigger, more ambitious goals.

It might sound obvious – maybe you’ve read some success books saying similar. But HAVE YOU TRIED IT?

So many people don’t bother writing down specific goals, thinking it’s not necessary, without realising it’s FUNDAMENTAL.

Anyway, I’ll leave it with you to work magic with a pen.

If you imagine the world is a cocktail party…

Great Britain has just waltzed right up to the nibbles tray, taken a carrot stick, plunged it into a pot of mayonnaise and then bitten into it.

Nothing wrong with that, you say. It’s a cocktail party after all, and the guests are expected to eat.

I mean, look at Germany. They’re holding a massive glass of red wine and munching away on fistful of bread-sticks.

And that’s totally fine.

But what’s this…?

The guests collectively gasp in horror as Britain returns to the tray and shoves its half-chomped carrot stick, speckled with saliva, BACK INTO THE MAYONNAISE.

Nobody says it, but everybody knows it…

It’s a double dip.

Nobody likes a double dip.

But a double dip is what’s happened.

In the first three months of this year, the UK economy shrank…

Construction output fell by 3percent between January and March. The industrial sector shrank by 0.4percent. The services sector (making up 3/4 of the UK economy) – grew by a tiny 0.1percent.

Which makes us – officially – in the second trough of a double dip recession.

Forgive me if I don’t break out the champagne.

I will, however, return to a theme I wrote about a few issues ago, which may be even more important now we’re back in the economic doldrums.

How to let your money earn more money

I wrote a letter on the 19th April ago asking ‘Is this Better Than Your Bank?’

It was about the miserable rates of interest enjoyed by savers who put their money into regular banks… and how a new crop of ‘peer-to-peer’ lenders is emerging to help people get better returns.

With peer-to-peer investing you put your money into small businesses who offer a much higher interest rate (6%-12%) than you’ve get from the bank. You can gear it so that you lend to slightly riskier businesses for a higher interest rate, or more safe pairs of hands for a lower rate.

Two of the biggest companies doing this are The Funding Circle and Zopa.

To read that issue in full, click here.

At the end of that email I asked if any Rich Lifers had used either of these services. I received some information from one reader that’s worth passing on.

He writes:

“I currently have about £1000 spread over 20 ‘lending offers’ in Zopa of £50 each (to minimise my risk). I only lend to high risk borrowers (which allow me to charge higher interest rates) and my £1000 is currently lent out at an avge. of 11.1%. Zopa take a 1% fee.

What I like about Zopa is that you can set an auto-lend feature on, which automatically relends your capital returned and interest back out to new borrowers as it comes in – in effect compounding your return quicker perhaps than you experience in a savings account at a much higher interest rate.

Of course, you’re liable for tax on the interest you earn but Zopa make this as pain-free as possible by sending you an annual statement which shows you how much you should be declaring to HMRC every year.

Funding Circle is very similar but I think there is a minimum amount you need to open your account and lend with them and some of the smaller ‘savers’ or people just getting started probably wouldn’t be able to take advantage of it like you can with Zopa.”

I’m very impressed – a 11.1% interest rate (even despite Zopa’s 1% cut) is amazing.

If you’ve had experience with this kind of saving – either as a lender or a small business owner who is benefiting from borrowing money this way – do let me know:
lewisgeary@hotmail.co.uk

And if you’re worried about the recession, I highly recommend you read this little report I wrote called The 3 Worst Things to To With Your Money, which is online here.

After my very serious-minded Rich Life Letter post last time about inflation, interest rates and why banks are totally rubbish places to keep your money….

… I thought I’d lighten the mood and give you something really fun for free that could turn next weekend into a mini-cash cow. (Sorry I actually meant to send you this on Sunday but pesky technology got the better of me!)

That’s some title for an ebook, right?

You’ll discover:

1. Quick-start essentials for newbies - from picking the right bookmaker to setting up a betting account and placing bets (I give away all the stuff you usually pay for when you buy over-priced betting guides!)

2. How to put the odds on your side and enjoy the profiting power of a bookmaker

3. The asset spread secret: how to turn sports betting into a long-term investment strategy

Now, I’ll say something upfront. If you have no interest in sports betting and you’d never place a bet in your life, that’s absolutely fine by me. Please look out for The Rich Life Letter later this week, in which I’ll tell you about something completely different – a business plan that you can join me on.

And it gets better…

As you might know, this sort of service can go from anything from £5-£30 per month…

But if you get into this now, you won’t have to pay a penny for it – not ever.

So what we’re talking here is getting a twice weekly betting advice service and The Intelligent Investors Guide to Sports Betting, all without reaching for your wallet, purse or that massive bowl of 2p pieces.

Grab it while you can – you can always unsubscribe if you’re not happy with the information. And remember, it doesn’t cost anything.

Details are here.

Let me quickly explain why you’re getting this exclusive…

How I got to know Eddie Lyons

I’m not much of a betting man.

My wife loves entering competitions, and I love the odd flutter on the gee-gees or a footie match but I’ve got so many other things competing for my attention – writing these newsletters, developing information products, trying business ideas, cooking for my family, playing with the kids… I don’t really have the time or energy to think about systems or try them out for you.

So I was excited when my co-publisher Gareth introduced me to the work of Eddie Lyons and said:

“What do you think? Would your readers be interested?”

I checked out all his back issues and was impressed. Here’s a guy with the nous and passion to set up his email newsletter, gather an intimate group of followers and begin sharing his amazing betting insights with them.

Eddie is one of those guys who obsesses over every major sporting event… hunts down little-known markets, bookie mistakes and win-win opportunities… spends countless hours poring over stats and trawling blogs, forums and websites for insights.

When Gareth told me I could offer this to Rich Life Letter readers at zero cost I immediately said “YES”.

And so here it is – a brilliant, funny email service for people who love sport and love the idea of making a bit of extra money for the weekend.

Once you join up and download Eddie’s book you can email him with questions and advice. He’s a lovely bloke and happy to guide you through the betting maze.

Hope you enjoy it.

But don’t wait for this service to get a price tag. Lock yourself in for free by clicking here and you’ll never ever have to pay.

So then… interest rates.

Hardly the most rock and roll subject to write about, I humbly admit.

When I was a younger, more hirsute, more handsome buck around town, I was utterly baffled by interest rates and why they wound people up so much.

…Then I got older.

…Then I got a mortgage.

….Then I started earning enough to store money in the bank for a ‘rainy day’ instead of frittering it away.

Then it began to matter. As did inflation, and all those other issues my Dad would moan on about when I was a teenager.

Because saving becomes a bit pointless (and unattractive) if interest rates are so low your money is sitting there being eroded away by inflation while banks gamble it on their own investments.

And when interest rates are high, a mortgage becomes a grisly financial albatross corpse around your neck – or simply unaffordable.

And while in recent years I have invested a lot of my money into:

The happiness of my wife and kids (of course, just in case Caroline reads this issue *cough cough*)

Having fun, because that’s when money is at its best

Starting businesses (successful ones, failed ones and CRAZY ONES)

…I have also been keeping some money in an old fashioned bank.

And if you’re one of those who has kept yourself relatively debt free (I don’t count mortgages here) and squirrels away some of your income in a savings nest egg, you might – like me – wonder…

“What’s the bloomin’ point of banks?”

On the 18th August a report on the recent budget by the Treasury Committee said that lax monetary policy” was “particularly penalising savers”.

What they’re referring to is this little habit the Bank of England has picked up of PRINTING NEW MONEY.

Why are they doing that?

Because at a historical record 0.5%, they can’t put interest rates any lower. And it was low interest rates which they hoped would kick-start house buying and high street spending and get the economy moving again.

So what next?

Only one thing for it…

Print money!

Since March 2009, the bank has injected £325bn of new money into the UK economy in an effort to revive consumer spending and economic growth.

The committee report says:

“Loose monetary policy, achieved through quantitative easing and low interest rates, has redistributional effects, particularly penalising savers, those with ‘drawdown pensions’ and those retiring now”.

In other words, they’re giving borrowers (remember the people who got us into the trouble in the first place) all the breaks and to hell with savers, pensioners and all the rest who don’t SPEND, SPEND, SPEND.

Bad news all round.

And if your blood is beginning to boil a little, then you’re not the only one…

I’ve had many emails from Rich Lifers feeling – rightly – hard done by, especially when all they’ve done in life is worked hard, paid taxes, saved a bit of money, and now find themselves poor.

But one recent email suggested an alternative to watching your savings rot in a bank…

Better than a bank?

My reader asks…

“Have you heard of Funding Circle? I received info through a flyer and it sounds a good place to put your money – much better than the banks and building societies. Your money is then lent out to small businesses at competitive rates.”

Well, yes, I had heard of such a thing. It’s called ‘peer to peer’ lending and saving.

What happens is you put your money into small businesses who offer a much higher interest rate (6%-9%) than you’ve get from the bank.

You can gear it so that you lend to slightly riskier businesses for a higher interest rate, or more safe pairs of hands for a lower rate.

Now, you might rightly hear alarm bells…

“Risk? I don’t want to risk my savings!”

At first glance this does seem the big drawback in such a scheme. If banks don’t want to lend to small businesses, why should we? Surely if they’re such a good bet, banks would be throwing money at them?

Well, first off the situation these days is that perfectly good businesses aren’t getting loans from banks – for no fault of their own. This is something the government has been trying to tackle.

Secondly, in peer-to-peer schemes you don’t invest all your money in a business… your money is spread over many multiple businesses in different sectors, which means that you get an average return from the spread you’ve invested in.

Two of the companies offering this are:

Funding circle www.fundingcircle.com/

Zopa http://uk.zopa.com/

These aren’t fly-by-night internet start-ups with a zany concept… they’re becoming big business. So much so, the banks are now worried.

Andy Haldane, head of policy at the Bank of England, said last month ‘Small peer-to-peer lenders like Zopa and Funding Circle could in time replace High Street banks.’

If you’ve any experience of ‘peer to peer’ saving (or borrowing, as a small business) then I’d love to hear about your experience. Please write to: lewisgeary@hotmail.co.uk.

Okay, roll the music…

(The Star Wars or Superman theme should probably do it.)

“THE STORY SO FAR…”

First I hit you with the bad news.

On the 25th of May I revealed how the budget is going to squeeze you, and why the evil Ponzi schemers were out in force… sharking around for panicking savers to lure into their net…

On the 19th of May I told you about a new book that has come out and said what most “money saving experts” don’t tell you…. that saving and scrimping isn’t enough… that sitting tight and waiting for the government or an economic miracle won’t save you or look after you into old age.

Author Laura Vanderkam says that to enjoy a retirement free of stress, disappointment and impoverished boredom, it’s essential to create your own sources of added income, however small.

This sounds unfair doesn’t it?

What were those years of work, taxes, national insurance payments and obedience for?

Who exactly blew the nation’s cash and bankrupted us?

It wasn’t you, was it?

I know how you feel. But this is the reality of the situation in Britain – the Western world, even – today. We have to get over ideas of unfairness. They’re not constructive. Instead of wringing our hands, we need to get out there and make the best of our lives using the resources at hand.

See all those mega-wealthy politicians, bankers and silver-spooned toffs that everyone’s getting het up about…?

Stuff ‘em. Ignore them. They’re not the key to your future.

YOU are.

It’s not too late to improve your lot in life – however old you are, however much you feel you’ve missed the boat, however much you feel you’ve been give NO breaks and NO advantages…

NOW is the time to grasp the nettle and try a few new things outside your ‘comfort zone’ (I hate that phrase but I can’t think of a better way to say it).

You might fail a few times, you might go down a few blind alleys – that’s what ALL successful people go through.

Of course, it’s up to me to give you some kind of inside track. My role is to present you with specific ways you can start turning things around and make the sort of money that eases the burden – doing something you enjoy and that’s rewarding.

And so…

Three reliable, proven escape routes from money misery

Last Friday I gave you one reliable and fun option for bringing in some capital – and that was to use eBay to trade carefully targeted products, following expert Amanda O’Brien’s strategy. Ebay is great because it’s a ready-created marketplace you can plug right into without needing your own website (you can even do it without filling your home with stock.)

Of course, not everyone wants to set up an eBay or Amazon business – some people love it, others think “Meh, not interested”…

You might be wondering are there alternatives?

In a few weeks time I’m going to tell you about a MASSIVE alternative that makes ridiculous money for most of these super-wealth online business people. Until recently it was hard for the ordinary Joe & Josephine to achieve because certain skills and facilities were required.

But some recent developments have changed all that. Now it’s possible to assemble very valuable ‘high ticket’ items from your kitchen table (or laptop)…. using other people’s expertise to fill in for the bits you can’t do yourself.

I’m preparing a full, interactive programme for release in the next few weeks. So please keep checking your Rich Life Letter in the next month. As soon as I have more details I’ll let you know.

But if you’re really time poor, and just want to do something quick in the evening with no need to send emails or do deals…. then today’s letter is for you.

Have a quick read of this fascinating story about a retired Staffordshire couple who cracked their money problems and now spend their ‘golden years’ yachting off the coast of Majorca…

An evening at your laptop, a morning checking your earnings…

This is interesting and inspiring stuff. This couple spend about 15 minutes each evening to generate about £410 per week – sometimes a lot more. No, it’s not turning them into millionaires, but it’s given them an income while allowing them to live the lifestyle they’ve always wanted.

This is the first time this has gone to people outside Agora Ltd’s inner circle of subscribers, so I wanted to get you the info as soon as it was released.

I can vouch for this – what’s more, there’s an 8 week full money-back trial so you can check it out for yourself.

Take a look and see what you think.

All the details are here.

I’ll be back next time with more options and ideas to think about.

How was your Bank Holiday weekend?

Turns out my family lunch went much smoother than I expected (see last Sunday’s email for details)…

…and in answer to one eagle-eyed reader’s question:

“How do you get covered in duck fat when preparing a rib of beef?”

Aha! Well… the reason I get duck fat spatters on my shirt when cooking beef is that I use duck (or goose) fat to cook my roast potatoes.

Watch out Delia, Heston, Nigella, Gordon, Hugh and Jamie – there’s a new guy in town.

It reminds me, a couple of years ago I wrote a series of Rich Life Letters about getting more out of the food you buy. Loads of readers wrote in with their own moneysaving, waste-avoiding tips… and I believe this was one of them:

“Meat-eaters, KEEP YOUR FAT.”

Whenever you cook fatty meat like duck, goose, pork or lamb shoulder, always pour the fat into a container.

Firstly it stops your drain getting blocked… (it turns as solid as wax when it cools).

Secondly, it can keep in the fridge for many weeks and is – by a country mile – the ultimate fat for roasting your vegetables.

Now, if you happen to be thinking:

“Yes, yes, Lewis, I’ve been doing this for years, don’t teach me to suck duck eggs you kitchen chancer, this is old news….” (or something along those lines).

Well, hear this my fiend – that was just an OPENING salvo for today’s email.

Forget saving a few quid on fat, let’s move onto the harder stuff…

Revealed, the 3 worst things to do with your money

A few weeks ago I sent you an email titled “How the happiest people in the world spend their money”.

Author Laura Vanderkam explained that the old notions about having a job for life and a comfortable retirement are becoming outmoded. Not only do we have to work longer, what we have at the end of it probably won’t be enough.

Vanderkam suggests that even if you have a regular job or a retirement income, you need to find ways to increase your earnings.

Because if you don’t, here are the 3 alternatives for getting wealthy and enjoying a comfortable, stress-free life:

1. Buy a Lottery ticket and cross your fingers, toes, and any other crossable bits (don’t write in and tell me, this is just for fun) and HOPE.

Lewis Verdict: Unlikely.

2. Hope the government will turn around and say: “Austerity? HAHA! Only joking, we’ve actually got loadsa money, fill your boots people of Britain.”

Lewis Verdict: Unlikelier.

3. Rely on whatever you’ve got saved up, hope that inflation doesn’t get out of control and eat up your money, sit tight and eat leftover duck fat from a bowl.

Lewis Verdict: most likely outcome if the UK keeps going on the current track.

Or you can wise up and do what this lady did…

Could this self-made woman hold the answer to your money problems?

Like many home entrepreneurs looking to make a bit of spare-time cash, Amanda O’Brien spent lots on many different moneymaking schemes – all of which turned out to be rubbish.

But unlike most wannabe home entrepreneurs, Amanda didn’t give up. Her husband bought and sold a bit on eBay and suggested she try the online auction site as a way of making a little.

Amanda was sceptical. In her words: “I’d heard of eBay, but thought of it only as a way of getting rid of old junk.”

Then, one New Years Day, with the idea swimming around her head, Amanda switched on her PC, went to the eBay website, looked around and realised that literally ANYTHING sells on the site.

That’s when she started to become excited about the possibility of using eBay to run a buy-low-sell-high business.

However, there were three small problems… maybe the same three things you’ve come up against whenever you’ve considered eBay in the past:

1) What to sell
2) Where to buy it cheaply
3) How to get people to buy it for a profit

These are the three biggest obstacles facing any new, would-be eBay entrepreneur. But Amanda overcame them pretty quickly and fairly easily.

If you’ve ever wanted to give eBay a try but you’ve encountered one or more of these problems and given up, then find out what Amanda did by clicking here.

Talking of which…

How we got a new dining table for 99p

My wife loves eBay. Only last she bought a massive dining table (she wants to put it outside in the garden, crazy!) for 99p.

The seller even delivered it to us (45 minutes drive away) for £9 – the NEXT DAY and on Easter Sunday.

With a bit of love and attention, this is easily saleable at a decent markup. Not that we’re getting rid – it’s going to be painted a crazy colour, weather-proofed and turned into a table for this summer’s barbeque shenanigans.

Just shows you what you can find!

But to turn this into a regular income, Amanda is FAR more systematic and focussed than this…

She helps you target specific types of product from specific sources that are almost guaranteed to sell at a hefty markup, time and time again.

In my view it’s a great way for any beginner to test the home business water without having to build websites, create their own products or learn marketing.

The only big drawback of eBay is…

Why you should ignore 99% of the phoney gurus

There’s huge amount of phony eBay experts out there in Internet Land. They hawk their flimsy manuals, claiming to know some kind of secret, but usually stating the utterly obvious.

This is why I would urge you to try out Amanda O’Brien. In my opinion she’s one of the best. You get straight talking, no-nonsense instructions. Plus lots of sources and suppliers you can go to. In fact, everything you need to copy her business.

If you’re interested in making a bit of extra money on eBay, read this first before you do anything else:

Amanda’s Ebay Powerseller Secrets

Cheers for now,

Lewis

A warning about the number 0703

A Rich Life reader has alerted me to the latest attempt to rip-off the vulnerable, known as the ’0703 telephone number scam’.

The idea of 0703 numbers is that you can use them to get calls directed to you, even if you’re not in the office. But they are premium rate numbers, so more expensive.

All good and fine if used legitimately.

But now cheeky fraudsters are emailing people with apparently important messages, and getting them to return the call on an 0703 number. Most people think it’s just a regular mobile, but it’s not.

My reader called one back and got charged £1.44.

Okay, so this isn’t going to ruin your life, but it’s money being unfairly lifted directly from your pocket for no gain whatsoever.

What’s clever about these criminals is that they are using personally tailored emails to fish out victims. For instance, let’s say you are a designer – you’d get an email saying someone was trying to contact you about design work.

Now, this scam was mentioned as far back as 2010 on Watchdog, but the email from my reader shows that this is still happening.

And if they are still doing it, these dodgy fraudsters must be raking it in -imagine thousands of little £2 bonuses slipping into your account every time someone calls the number!

Oh, and here’s another one to watch out for…

Are you the victim of a ghost broker?

No, these are not City boys, risen from the dead, come to crash the economy in what shall be known forever more as the Day of the Zombie Bankers.

Although that would be… interesting.

What I’m talking about are apparently bona fide insurance brokers who offer you cheap car insurance – usually in online adverts and newspaper classified ads.

Sounds too good to be true?

Yep, you guessed it… it is.

What the ghost broker does is act as a middle man between you and a real broker…

But they lie about your details (age, sex, past history, etc) in order to get the cheapest deal…

Meaning your insurance is invalid.

What’s so horrible about this is that people are driving around – right now – not realising that they’re not properly covered.

The solution?

If someone approaches you with an unbeatable motor insurance deal, think twice. Proper insurance companies won’t do email or phone potential customers out of the blue.

And if you see an advert for one, check the company out before you look any further. Only deal with firms that are listed on the FSA register

Finally, on a more positive Easter bunny note…

Pay nothing for these brilliant sporting insights

If you like sport, and you like a flutter now and then, I’ve got some news you might like…

My publisher/editor and I have been following a blogger for the past 6 months, marvelling at his brilliant insights into the big sporting events… his great sense of humour and really entertaining – but informative emails and blog posts…

So much so that we’ve convinced him to set up a free service for Rich Life letter readers with tips, sports analysis, betting strategies and all kinds of information you might enjoy.

This should be ready in the next couple of weeks – I’ll email you as soon as I’ve more news.
