These days it’s getting easier to try out home businesses. Thanks to the relentless march of the internet, so many of the tools you need now cost absolutely nothing.

If you’re like me, phone calls take up a big chunk of your monthly bills. To make matters worse, I also have to make the occasional overseas call or conference call. So here’s something I’ve done, which I thoroughly recommend.
Download something called Skype (no cost) onto your computer and you can make internet phone calls to other people who also have Skype. Wherever you are in the world, these phone calls won’t cost a penny.
You can also use it for video calls and conference calls.
If you use Skype to call other people’s landlines and mobiles it will cost you money BUT at a hugely competitive rate.
And if there’s someone who you spend a lot of time calling, perhaps an overseas relative or friend, then just hassle them to get Skype too. That’s how I gotinto it!
* Get your own free website
A few years ago if you wanted your own website you needed to know computer code or pay someone clever. It would either cause a massive headache… or cost you thousands of pounds.
For many people NOT born with a digital spoon in their mouth (i.e. anyone born before 1980!) this was a major barrier to making money online.
Now it’s really easy. Really quick. And it doesn’t cost you anything.
Word Press is absolutely revolutionary. It means anyone can set up a website. You can find out about it here
It’s unbelievably user-friendly. They talk in no-nonsense, layman’s terms and will even give you a tour.
Yes, it’s a blog website. Which means you can post information, clips, news and ideas every day. But you can also play around with it (no skills needed) and change it into something that looks more like a regular website. Remarkably, this website you’re on NOW is a Word Press site!
With a regular website you can advertise products and services… publish yourself… write about our favourite hobby or business… anything really.
* Build your own email list for free
Many home businesses these days (most kinds of businesses, in fact) need email marketing. This is where you send newsletter, adverts, offers and links by email to your subscribers or customers.
To set an ezine or e-letter (whatever you want to call it) you need something called a broadcasting system. This allows you to get people to ‘opt in’ to receiving an email newsletter. You can then legally mass-broadcast emails to your audience.

Google-docs allows you two write up documents and store them online for nothing. You can then access them from any computer, anywhere, anytime.
