Brace yourself for some tough talk that could change your life. I’m about to reveal why DOING THE RIGHT THING will ruin your chances of financial freedom.
It started with my parents… Then my teachers got in on the act… Then it was the turn of some tired looking official down at the job centre, each telling me the same thing…
‘You haven’t been to university, so just get a job, any job, work hard and don’t cause trouble’.
Actually it was worse, because I was always being told I’d be ‘lucky’ to get a job. I might have had the best record collection of all my friends, and might have been the ONLY kid at school who managed to drive a teacher’s car into the caretakers shed.
But try putting that on your CV and see where it gets you. About as far as writing ‘setting fire to the church’ under the hobbies and interests section.
This was back in the 80s, when unemployment was high and it seemed everyone was signing on the dole, including me for stretches (and I didn’t even do that properly – I was ALWAYS late for job seekers interviews). So for a while I did what I was told.
Well, I did a third of it.
I got job after job, from barman to delivery man to office worker to telesales ‘executive’. I think the ‘executive’ part was meant to make me feel better, but it didn’t seem to help me out when I ran out of money towards the end of each month.
This went on for years. I worked for idiot after idiot, who’d all fallen for this lie that working hard is the key to get on in life. And as you may have guessed, I didn’t really last long in any role I was ‘lucky’ enough to get.
All right, telling your boss he’s a twat certainly speeds things up, but even when I put the hours in, worked hard, stayed late, ticked all the boxes, my only reward was a pat on the back and a small pay rise (after which I was expected to do even MORE work because now I was a ‘senior executive’). But this is what most people put up with – for 40 years of their life!
Incredible!
So, relax, take a deep breath, and answer me this…
How far has doing the right thing got you?
Working hard, being punctual, doing what your boss says, putting in extra hours….
Just think about what YOU’VE given, and think about what you’ve received in return.
But don’t think about it too long, because if you’re anything like me you’ll weep.
For years I did the whole two-hour commute thing, I worked longer hours than I was meant to, I gave more than my bosses asked of me… And in return I got sweet FA. Okay, every now and then I got a couple of thousand pounds bonus. And I was taken out for a couple of lunches and made to feel like I was getting somewhere. But basically I worked 45+ hours a week for a ‘decent’ wage, and slept walked through most of the weekends while my lobotomized brain tried to recover.
That was then.
Now I need to tell you something that’s pretty personal. I’m not saying this to show off. I mean I NEVER tell people what I’m about to tell you, not even friends I’ve known for 20+ years.
So here goes…
I don’t think I’ve ‘worked hard’ for years – not in the traditional sense at least. I haven’t had a boss for ages. And these days I can get up when I like (which bizarrely is quite early now that I don’t HAVE to get up. Go figure.) And if anything I’m more rebellious, outspoken, and angry with the system and how it rips people off than ever before.
In short – I wouldn’t last 5 minutes in a ‘decent job’.
So how come I manage to pay less for almost everything than most people I know. And how come I’ve managed to earn £100,000+ year in year one – for going against the grain?
Well today, I’m putting myself in the position of the career’s advisor I had all those years ago. I’m sitting in his seat, telling YOU what you should be doing if you want to get somewhere. Except I’m not reeking of Old Spice. And I won’t be telling you to work your socks off at your day job either. Because that’s the first myth that needs taking down in flames…
The biggest lie that’s holding you back…
Working at a regular 9-5 job will get you NOWHERE. It certainly won’t give you the money you deserve, or the time and freedom to enjoy it.
Sound harsh? Tough. That’s the REALITY of it. And it took me ages to admit it.
I only started making proper money, and seeing my life accelerate forward, when I started doing the ‘wrong’ thing. Now I don’t mean that one day I woke up and started dealing drugs, holding up banks and stealing the Christmas Club money like Arthur Fowler. All I mean is I just started to ignore mainstream, common place advice, and started to investigate little-known, hidden advice on how to cut bills, pay less, and make MORE.
From that point on, I started to pull away from the pack and enjoy a better standard of living (and a bigger bank account) than nearly all of my old school friends. Even the ones who went to university. And there’s no reason you can’t do the same. Really, not one.
In fact, I reckon there’s a very good reason why you’re a dead cert to do better than most people…
The first thing that makes you different from most people (and more likely to be more successful than most people)…
You and me have something in common, but like it or not it makes us a little different…
We’re willing to take a look at things most people simply don’t have the guts or the smarts to find and try out. And by doing that, we have the potential to make a whole lot more, working a whole lot less.
That’s the reason I started The Rich Life Letter – so I could gather together a band of like-minded souls who were happy to think differently and give things a go.
So rule one… Actually I HATE rules, so maybe I should call this suggestion number 1 in The Rich Life Letter manifesto…
STOP DOING THE RIGHT THING!
That means following the lie that working hard and climbing the corporate ladder will sort out your future. It won’t. And with the ideas and proven plans I’ll show you through The Rich Life Letter, I’ll have you earning more than an accountant who’s studied for 5 years and works 10 hour days.
It’s a tough thing to achieve. And I don’t expect you to march into your boss’s office and scream ‘SCREW YOU – I’M WORTH MORE THAN £25K A YEAR!’ – even if that is the truth. Instead, read these letters, take a look at the ideas that we’ll cover, and put some into practice. In fact, in the coming weeks, I’ll be showing you ways to earn decent second incomes and ways to cut your bills to the bone (including tax) that most straight-laced, career- ladder people would think outrageous.
